Buying New iMac Question?
So I currently have an iMac running OSX 10.4. I've convinced my parents to switch to Mac...They are most likely going to get an iMac with Apple's new Lion OS.
I've been looking to upgrade my mac's OS (preferably to Lion when it comes out) but from what I've heard you MUST buy the Mac Box Set (with iLife, iWork, and the OS) to upgrade from 10.4. Is this true?
Second, I am interested in not only upgrading my OS to Lion, but also iLife (I currently have '06) to '11. If my parents buy the new iMac with Lion OS, will I be able to use their included install disk to install the OS and iLife to my older iMac as well?
If not, does Apple sell new, plain 'ole iMacs without included software? It seems then it would make more sense (if we couldn't use the new iMac's disk on the old iMac) to buy the Mac Box Set and install that on both of our iMacs.
Thanks for the help!
First, you don't need to buy the Mac box set. You can just buy the OS. Since you have 10.4 you won't be able to use the upgrade version and will need to purchase the Full Version.
If your parents buy a new Mac, you cannot use their discs on your Mac. The discs only work on the exact same make and model of computer. Besides, using them on your Mac would be illegal.
Apple does not sell Macs without an OS. But since the OS is only $30 or so, it's not a big deal. All new Macs come with the OS and iLife installed.
If you buy the box set, it can only be used on one computer. Apple does sell a Family Pack for iLife and iWork that costs more but allows the software to be installed on 3 Macs.
