How does Mac Os check its license?

I have bought a family pack of Mac Os X 10.5. My colleague has installed on her MacBook. However, the installation didn't require a serial number being entered, nor an activation process. I want to know if the family pack does check its license being used, so is it possible I use this disc to install on over 5 machines?

well i have a single user and ive given it to some of my friends to install on their machines! no licence check. that is with Tiger. Dont know about Leopard
