iMac 10.2.8 - Making Movies?

Is there any programmes I can get that will allow me to make mini-movies on my iMac. G4 Processor running on 10.2.8 (soon upgrading to 10.4 tiger) Ive tried iMovie but it wont work with any of my files even when I convert them to .DV format. So. Any ideas?

What type of files do you have?
