Can I dual boot mac os 9 and mac os x tiger on an ibook g3?
I have an iBook g3 (clamshell) with the current operating system of mac os 9.2 and i want to dual boot with mac os x tiger can you give me the steps to do that?
You DO NOT need to make any separate partition for OS X. Who thought up that idea, I'll never know. Yes, there can be some advantages to having separate partitions, such as that if one partition gets corrupt and needs to be erased, you don't loose what's on the other partition, but it has nothing to do with booting these two systems.
None of the files and directories of OS X have any names that are in common with OS 9. The boot process only cares about what it needs, so it just loads into RAM the files and directories on its own list of boot items. Anything else on that partition might as well be grandma's cornbread recipe as far as the bootup process is concerned.
Only the last model of iBook with Firewrie port can run OS 10.4. All previous models are limited to OS 10.3.9 or earlier unless you install XPostFacto.
As far as "run 9.22 in classic mode", that doesn't have a clear meaning. OS 9 is ALWAYS classic. If the answerer meant to say "in classic environment, you can launch classic environment while booted to OS X, or you can boot to OS 9, whichever you wish. The limitation of not being able to boot to OS 9 is for Macs built after January 2003. It has nothing to do with the iBook G3 models.
With one partition for both OS 9 and OS X, you are limited to using the OS X System Preferences > Startup Disk, and the OS 9 Control Panels > Startup Disk to choose the boot system. You would not be able to use the option key to envoke the Startup Manager. That screen only shows bootable drive volumes (separate HDDs or separate partitions).
