apple software reinstall drive
what are the first signs of hard drive failure or maybe RAM failure?

I have an iMac G5 1.8Ghz, 1Gb RAM, and 200Gb Hard drive. Recently my house had some electrical problems so we had to move out, my computer was working fine then. I had it put away for a few weeks, then found a place to stay until my house is fixed. I am currently using an apple keyboard with the black keys, a power cable from an old PC and a mouse I bought for 10 bucks. Everything was working fine, I downloaded a few updates from software update, I believe there was a iTunes update, a java update and 1 for 10.4.10. After that my computer crashed. It wouldn't start up normally or in safe mode, I couldn't even run any commands in verbose mode. I reinstalled OS X and still it has trouble booting normally and when it does it's extremely slow. I don't know if my hard drive is giving out or the ram, maybe even the processor. Somebody help please!

If your ram is going bad, you usually won't be able to start up the computer. It just freezes on start up. If the hard drive is going bad, things take longer to load including the startup. If you are having problems like you suggest, odds are it is the hard drive. You should run the disk utility program in the applications folder. Have it repair permissions, then run the verify hard disk. If the hard disk shows problems, then run disk repair off the MacOs X install disk. I repaired computers for a school district for 10 years, the only problems I ever found were hard drives going bad. Never had bad ram or a motherboard go bad.
