What is the purpose of the Mac OS X Development Kit?

I'm just curious, is it a programming compiler/IDE that supports many languages. If so, how many languages does it support?

It's just an IDE that has a GUI designer for OS X applications (like Visual Studio). It uses GCC (GNU C Compiler / Compiler Collection) for nearly all compilations, which supports many languages like C, C++, Objective-C and Fortran. That's all you would really write a large app in anyway.
