Macbook Pro or Dell Studio?
Should I buy a Macbook Pro 13.3" (2.53GHz model) or Dell Studio 15 with blu-ray rive and full HD screen?
I need a laptop for college but I can't decide whether to go for windows or go for apple and not have blu-ray and HD screen but have better software, for movie-making, photos etcetera.
Help!
Please at least tell me why one is better than the other.
There is no "better" choice persay. The better choice is 100% dependent on what YOU want to do as a computer user. Your computer should suit your computing needs, not those of the rest of the Internet, or some good marketing campaign from Apple.
If you think you would really like to watch BluRay discs on your computer, you should likely go to the Dell (or how about an HP 16t model from their Entertainment series of laptops?). Because you won't get anything like that on the Mac for the time being (hopefully in the next upgrade, as Sony is finally loosening the licensing reigns on BluRay).
If you want to do video editing for free, okay, the Mac is likely the better option. iMovie is better than Windows Movie Maker and Video Spin. But what about spending like only $50-100 on a piece of video editing software? If you can manage that, then you can buy a very capable Windows based NLE.
Sony Vegas Movie Studio, Corel Ulead Video Studio, Adobe Premiere Elements all have installers for Windows. They are all viable options on Windows. I think Sony Vegas likely has the easiest learning curve, at least by reputation (and their most basic option is likely the cheapest of the choices). I think Adobe has the most robust option. And its attractive as it will work well with other Adobe products like Photoshop and After Effects. But it is the most expensive option at around $140 I believe.
But hey if you save some cash by going IBM Clone over Mac, then you can put that towards the software. That's a totally viable way to go about this purchase.
Also, if you are truly into a lot of video editing, you will likely eventually need an external hard drive. So another thing to buy with money saved. And I like the HP 16t because it comes with an Express 3/4 slot which you can then get an eSata adaptor for (eSata right now will give you the highest amount of bandwidth from an external drive for video editing).
