how do i get full quality out of my flip?

ok so i just got a flip mino hd and the qualit on the screen looks amazing, but as soon as i import it it looks like shit. i have downloaded streamclip, and it still doesn't seem to convert well either. i am using either imovie hd(the original) or final cut express. i have a Mac 10.6 and the device itself was purchased in the summer of 06. so roughly 5 years ago. is there any advice anyone could give me, because i really love the flip and want full use and quality out of it, PLEASE HELP!!!
