Cut Academic
In the academic world, if you don't like your reading, do you still finish the reading?

I really really connect with some of the reading assignments I get in college - but they're always the ones that aren't famous writers!!!

I hate Pope, Swift, etc. but like some sorta obscure writers from the 18th century like the Earl of Rochester and Joseph Addison. I even kinda like John Bunyan from the 17th century. However, the problem is, I CANNOT read the stuff I don't like. Its physically impossible - my eyes water and I doze off and don't get anything out of the text.

In modern literature I think James Joyce, Hemingway, etc. are, frankly, boring, but I like guys like H.G. Welles and Isaac Asimov

Does this mean I'm not cut out to be an academic, or is it
not unusual to skip over the texts that don't agree with your taste? Does it mean you're worse-off if your taste in literature doesn't connect with scholarly works?

If you're reading for fun, of course you can do what you want. If you're trying to learn about the literature of a particular time and/or place, though, it's important to read the major texts.

One of the tricks is in finding a reason for reading. When the text is fun, the reason to read is because it's fun. When the text isn't fun, the reason has to be something else. One reason for readings texts like these is to understand why others would like them. Another reason is to understand the tastes of people at the time the text was written. If for no other reason, you might read the texts in order to be able to speak with authority about your dislike of them. (Think about how it sounds when someone says a movie is bad and then admits that she/he hasn't seen the film.)

Once you have your PhD, you can pick and choose the texts you want to focus on (though you may end up teaching classes in which you have to cover the less interesting ones). Up to that point, you have to find a way to deal with the "boring" stuff.
