What's the safest and most straight-forward way to play Region 2 DVDs on a Region 1 computer?

I want to see solutions for both Mac and PC. Specifically, OS 10.3 and Windows XP Professional.

If there is a way to do it without a chance of seriously screwing up my computer, I'd like to hear about it. Also, please let me know if this would then prevent me from playing games or watching movies from Region 1.

Region 1 in considered NTSC and Region 2 is PAL, anyways you should be able to play PAL movies on a NTSC computer. However if you have a modified xbox Unleash X comes with a emulator for PAL what you do is get your dvd playback kit in highlight play dvd on the main screen and press start and there should be run as Pal on the list you get, but you problably dont have a xbox like that.
